After watching the video about the girl wrestler in Michigan I think that girls should be allowed toplay men's sports no matter contact or not. People may have concerns about most boys being bigger, stronger and faster than girls. In the video, however, it stated that although the girl's opponent may have been faster than her, she was in fact stronger than he was. Also, in wrestling, your opponents are in your weight class and thus basically the same size as you are. So really she was at no disadvantage in this match or any of the matches she competed in all season. She ended up being one of the best wrestlers in the state, why take that away from her? Why take that opportunity away from any girl? Especially in a physical contact sport that is a very individual effort. There aren't many girls sports like that.
As for girls competing in other contact sports I think that as long as they are benefitting and contributing to the team they should be allowed to play. If a girl on the team helps the team win games then why would you not want her on the team? A line has to be drawn though if the girl gets injured or she is a distraction to the team. Otherwise, girls should be allowed to at least try out for any sport they would like.

i completely agree. There is no reason to deny a female that can contribute to the team an opportunity to play on the team. The girl is going to have to go through the same amount of work and effort that the guys are going to have to go through, so what is the difference. The girl wrestler showed that she could compete against the guys, so why not allow girls to compete if they have the ability to?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the points you make. In the world of sport winning and losing is what determines how successful you are as a coach, a player, or as a program, and if a female athlete gives you the ability to win a game than she should, by all means, be able to participate. I would actually be in favor of teams that don't select their participants based on gender, but simply on the level of skill, where the most talented play against the most talented, despite their gender. Unfortunately, to many issues would probably come from this, because of the notion that men hold an unfair advantage over women. But, back to your post, I totally agree, and am in favor of, women participating in mens sports as long as they are able to contribute at a competitive level. Keep the publicity stunts and media hype off of the field.
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else who has commented on your blog entry, I would agree that girls that participate in men's sports benefit tremendously from competing against guys. There is no question that male athletes tend to be more aggressive and often times play a lot rougher than female athletes do, but this helps girls to further develop their skills against some of the toughest competition that exists. I don't think that girls should be prevented from participating in male sports, especially those who have the talent and skill to be able to compete and hang with the guys.
ReplyDeleteYou brought up a great point about wrestling having weight classes. I also agreed with this point when you said: "As for girls competing in other contact sports I think that as long as they are benefitting and contributing to the team they should be allowed to play." If a male becomes a distraction that could be problematic as well.
